College Oceans classes from both High School East and West recently participated in an engaging STEAM workshop led by talented artist, Bri Sander, from UpSculpt. This enriching experience took place at the BOCES Outdoor Environmental Lab, where students had the opportunity to explore the intersection of community service, art and science at Sunken Meadow State Park.

Following the workshop, students embarked on an educational field trip to the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum. During their visit, they gained valuable insights into Long Island’s rich history of whaling, learning more about these amazing creatures and the significant impact this industry had on our coastal environment and communities.

In addition to exploring historical aspects, the workshop also focused on contemporary issues affecting marine life.

Students engaged in discussions with museum staff about modern-day threats to marine animals, particularly the challenge of marine debris. This hands-on learning experience not only deepened their understanding of environmental conservation but also inspired them to think critically about the role of individuals in protecting our oceans.

We are proud of our students for their commitment to learning and their enthusiasm for exploring the vital connections between art, history, and environmental stewardship. Thank you to Bri Sander and the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum for providing such an impactful experience!
