ENL students thriving at AMS

February 25, 2025

Ten years ago, Accompsett Middle School social worker, Carrie Taibi, saw the need for a program to help ENL students. So along with guidance counselor Emily Bootle, they helped create the ENL Mentor Program, which sees AMS students “buddy up” with students who are new to this country. The results have been tremendous.

"We've seen students have new friends to sit with in classes, say hi to in the hallways and have new lunch buddies,” said Taibi. “Our ENL students feel like they are now part of the school community.”

With assistance from guidance counselors, Emily Bootle, Gabby Martin, and Kim Richardson, the students meet during lunch period and work together on artwork, games, and music to learn about each other’s cultures and traditions.

“The students learn to treat each other with kindness and respect,” Taibi exclaimed.
